Getting married in Ireland and getting married in Northern Ireland involve two different legal processes, and it’s easy to get the two confused. In the Republic of Ireland, couples generally need to give at least three months’ notice and obtain a Marriage Registration Form (MRF). In Northern Ireland, the notice period, paperwork and registration process are different. In this guide, I’ll explain the main differences between getting legally married in Ireland and Northern Ireland, and point you towards my more detailed guides if you need the full step-by-step process.Getting Legally Married in IrelandIn the Republic of Ireland, you must give at least three months’ notice of your intention to marry to a Registrar at a Civil Registration Service. Both of you must attend your marriage notification appointment.Once the legal requirements have been completed, you’ll receive your Marriage Registration Form (MRF). This is the document that is signed by you, your two witnesses and your solemniser as part of your wedding ceremony. If you’re having a religious or secular ceremony, your marriage must be conducted by someone listed on the official Register of Solemnisers. After the ceremony, the completed MRF must be returned to a Civil Registration Service within one month so the marriage can be registered.Read my full step by step guide to getting legally married in Ireland Getting Legally Married in Northern IrelandIn Northern Ireland, the legal process is different. You must give notice to the Registrar for the district where your marriage will take place. The legal minimum is 28 days, although couples are advised to submit their notice forms earlier — normally around eight weeks before the wedding. Each of you completes a separate Marriage Notice Form (GRO 446). Once the Registrar is satisfied that the marriage can go ahead, a Marriage Schedule is prepared. This is the legal document required for the marriage ceremony. The rules around who conducts the ceremony, where it can take place and what happens to the Marriage Schedule afterwards depend on whether you’re having a civil ceremony or a religious/belief ceremony, so it’s important to follow the process that applies to the type of wedding you’re planning.Read my full guide to guide to getting legally married in Northern IrelandIreland vs Northern Ireland: The Main DifferencesNotice Period Ireland: You must give at least three months’ notice of your intention to marry to a Registrar at a Civil Registration Service.Northern Ireland: The legal minimum notice period is 28 days, although couples are normally advised to submit their marriage notice forms around eight weeks before the wedding. The Legal Paperwork Ireland: Once the marriage notification process has been completed, you’ll receive a Marriage Registration Form (MRF).Northern Ireland: Each person completes a separate Marriage Notice Form (GRO 446) and, once the requirements have been met, a Marriage Schedule is prepared for the ceremony.Who Can Conduct Your Marriage?
